About Our School

In the first decade of the 20th century, Puravath Paily and Chetikuzhi Varky came forward to pave the way for the birth of Poothrikka School. The Christian church was the guiding light for both of them. The areas including Poothrika were under the Kottayam diocese. Puravath Paily and Chetikuzhi Varky went to Kottayam and met the Metropolitan Pulikottil Mar Divannasios. A grant was approved by the church and the school started working behind the present waiting shed (Late N. V. Joseph’s building). Kavumolal Paulosasan was the main guru. In 1913, it was decided to take over the function of school by the government and to start the third class. Even after two years, with the commencement of the fourth standard, a lower primary school came up in Poothrikka village. Mr. N.V. Chacko M L C approached the then education minister Kunjiraman through Mr. T M Varghese, who was a minister. The Minister sanctioned fifty percent government assistance for school development. The decision to give away the land occupied by the Poothrikka Church for a fee (one Ana) and to bear the cost of the construction was an important turning point in the development path of the school. Things moved quickly when the locals stepped forward and started fundraising.
In 1945, the school evolved into an upper primary, with children admitted to the fifth grade, sixth grade in 1950, and seventh grade in 1951. The growth of the school, which was under the shadow of the Dewan rule, was thus elevated in the hands of the popular cabinet. October 28, 1952. V. J Mathew, who was the headmaster of the school for more than two decades, got a transfer to Poothrikka School. The steps taken by him till then and the areas of development are still brilliant pictures in the memory books of many. Mr. N P Varghese was instrumental behind the commencement of 8th standard in 1964. In 1966-67 the first SSLC was held. And in 2000, our school got the status of Government Higher Secondary School, being approved with higher secondary.
Established in 1912, now GHSS Poothrikka has an alumni strength of more than fifteen thousand and five hundred teachers. The school was one of the top schools in Ernakulam. Currently, the school functions with pre-primary and higher secondary divisions.
